Staff member, Allison and her son, on the cover page of USA Today regarding health care rally coordinated by CA State Senator Kamala Harris.

Sanctuary of Hope’s staff and young adult leaders joined a rally coordinated by California State Senator Kamala Harris to protect the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  We are following the proposed bill closely as it will significantly affect the health and well-being of  the youth community we serve.

More than 93% of SOH’s youth receive Medi-Cal (medicaid) and 67% have chronic health conditions.  The Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA) will put our youth at-risk of losing  health care as well as their well-being at-risk.

Current provisions under ACA allows children to stay on their parent’s health insurance until the age of 26; and under a separate provision allows former foster youth to have coverage until age 26.  AHCA will remove the provision providing coverage for foster youth up to age 26 back to age 21; and will make it difficult for any youth with pre-existing conditions to obtain coverage.

SOH will keep up the fight to advocate for our youth and to oppose the AHCA!  We hope you can join us in our advocacy by becoming informed and advocating your opposition to this bill.
